The Detection of Individual and Group Values in Young People: Relevant Methodological Solutions
Geger, A. E.
Russian Education and Society, v53 n1 p60-78 Jan 2011
Life values, value orientations, social attitudes, and other corresponding social collisions have been the object of many studies. Research on the values of youth in Russia is marred by methodological problems that have not been adequately addressed, and more careful approaches show that there may not be a finite list of values that are held and that can be easily measured. In this article, the author discusses the specific character of two different approaches: (1) the "measurement of values" method; and (2) the "detection of values" method. The author proposes a reflexive approach that is oriented toward the "detection of values." This method is classified as a "mixed strategy" making use of qualitative and quantitative approaches in organic unity. The author concludes that there is no ideal, all-encompassing list of values that are relevant to any and all social groups or to any and all individuals. The proposed reflexive approach that is designed to "detect values" makes it possible to reveal value diversity and to react to changes in the social environment to which people belong. The research approach presented possesses a whole set of cognitive possibilities, one that responds to the specific character of a concrete research situation. (Contains 1 table and 2 notes.)
