This pamphlet provides information on the history of and current trends toward neighborhood economic enterprises and provides guidance for setting up such enterprises. A bibliography of books, articles, and newsletters that have information on how to start and sustain neighborhood businesses and cooperatives is provided. Also included is a list of individuals, organizations, and government agencies that provide technical and financial assistance to such enterprises. Profiles of viable neighborhood economic enterprises in every major region of the United States are presented. These profiles illustrate the origins, development, and problems common to neighborhood economic enterprises. Areas covered include: (1) housing and neighborhood preservation; (2) food cooperatives and urban agriculture; (3) alternative technology and energy projects; and (4) neighborhood financial organizations.
