Holistic Engineering
Grasso, Domenico; Martinelli, David
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n28 pB8 Mar 2007
In this article, the authors discuss how to prepare high-quality engineers who are better equipped to serve in the changing global marketplace, and suggest educators in pursuing the holistic concept of the "unity of knowledge" that will yield a definition of engineering more fitting for the times ahead. The unity of knowledge is fundamentally about integrating knowledge across disciplines to deal with complex problems and better serve humanity. In engineering, a discipline that purports to design for humanity and improve the quality of life, the unity of knowledge should be an indispensible ingredient that asks engineers to look outward, beyond the fields of math and science, in search of solutions to entire problems. To better serve humanity, the authors contend that engineers need to revamp their curricula to include elements of law, economics, history, and other fields beyond math and science.
