OD-ing on Reality: An Interview with Alex Flinn
Lesesne, Teri S.
Teacher Librarian, v32 n5 p48 Jun 2005
Alex Flinn discusses her debut novel, Breathing Underwater, which received much critical acclaim. She absolutely felt like her second book was being compared to Breathing Underwater at first. Breaking Point (which was completed before Breathing Underwater was published) was very different in tone. It was darker. The voice was different. The ending was less hopeful, and she felt that people were expecting the books to be more similar. But the character of Paul in Breaking Point (whose awkwardness and difficulty fitting in made him an easy target for someone who wanted to use him to help commit a crime) was very different from the character of Nick in Breathing Underwater, who was more able to internalize his anger and frustration. So the books could not be similar. She has found that, as time has moved on, a different set of teenagers has gravitated toward Breaking Point, and they have enjoyed it just as much, but for different reasons. It was a book that some kids really needed to read to know that someone understood what they were going through. (Contains 4 resources.)
