This booklet (prepared by architects, educators, and community groups) presents some guidelines for creating learning environments in child care centers. The ideas and information could be used for creating new centers, for redesigning facilities, or for remodeling existing buildings. Emphasis is placed on the interrelatedness of the goals of a child development program and the physical envoronment in which the program is housed. Design ideas are outlined and discussed under three broad categories: (1) services (preentry, director, staff, health, kitchen, parent-community, laundry); (2) outdoor play (protected areas, open areas, sand, climbing, swinging); and (3) indoor play (observation, reading and writing, manipulative play, large group, art, cooking, eating, napping, toilet, etc.). Each of the suggested activity areas are described in terms of objectives, design requirements, participants, and activities for the children. Four sample centers are described and illustrated. (CS)
