This article considers the implications of Academies for the diversity of schooling in England. It seeks to establish the extent to which Academies are distinctive compared to other types of state secondary schools and whether this has been affected by a number of recent reforms. Different types of Academies are also be examined. Previous work in the field (Hatcher, 2006; Woods et al., 2007) have identified distinctive groupings of early Academies, with many having business and/or faith-based sponsors and the majority having a specialism (s) in business and/or enterprise. More recent waves of Academies have had a broader range of sponsors (including universities and local authorities (LAs)) and a more diverse range of specialisms (Curtis et al., 2008). This article questions whether this marks a significant shift in the programme or if the more established types of Academy still predominate. (Contains 1 table and 1 note.)
