Alcohol use among 458 members of Greek fraternities and sororities at the University of North Dakota was surveyed. The survey instrument, which was an adaptation of a questionnaire developed by Michael A. Looney, was directed to frequency of use, amounts consumed, type of beverage, attitudes, and demographic information. It was found that approximately 98 percent of students drink alcoholic beverages; fraternity members preferred beer, and sorority members drink beer and liquor about equally. Most drinking takes place in bars or night clubs. About 58 percent of fraternity members consider drinking to be reasonable, while 54.5 percent of sorority members consider it to be occasionally excessive. Respondents drink most often on weekend evenings. The most frequent reasons for drinking were sociability and enjoyment of taste. Situations where alcohol availability was reported to be important or unimportant are indicated. A small percentage of respondents appear to have experienced some problems as a result of their drinking. Questions answered differently by fraternities and sororities are listed. A sample questionnaire and aggregated responses to items are included. (SW)
