National Aquarium in Baltimore, MD. Dept. of Education.
The National Aquarium in Baltimore's sea turtle auditorium program introduces students in grades 6-9 to the seven (or eight, depending on which expert is consulted) species of sea turtles alive today. The program, which includes slides, films, artifacts, and discussion, focuses on sea turtle biology and conservation. This booklet covers most of the content of the program and offers a variety of activities for the different grade levels. It includes: (1) suggestions for activities before, during, and after the visit; (2) background information on sea turtles, including descriptions of these species: leatherback ("Dermochelys coriacea"); flatback ("Chelonia depressa"); green ("Chelonia mydas"); hawksbill ("Eretmochelys imbricata"); olive ridley ("Lepidochelys olivacea"); Kemp's ridley ("Lepidochelys kempi"); and loggerhead "Caretta caretta"); (3) worksheet for sea turtle observations and vocabulary word search; (4) loggerhead life cycle game (with instructional strategies); and (5) lists of books and magazines about sea turtles.
