More on Sea Turtles and Seaweed
Xin, Tian
Chinese Education and Society, v38 n3 p77-80 May-Jun 2005
"Sea turtle" and "seaweed"--otherwise known as "returnee from abroad" and "unemployed from abroad," respectively-- are a pair of popular new terms that are innately connected. In this article, the author discusses the common plight faced by "sea turtles" and "seaweeds" who returned from abroad to work in China. The author describes the experiences of his cousin who completed his studies and returned to China to work as a researcher in an institute that originally sent him to study abroad. Upon returning, his cousin was advised to look for another job instead as his acceptance to the institute would jeopardize their "benefits setup." From the experiences of his cousin and others who faced similar plight, the author contends that China must create a sound environment for the healthy growth of "sea turtle" talents. And it is only by the participation of everyone can this sound environment be possible. [Translated by Ted Wang.]
