Identities are not only shaped by self-perception, but are influenced by others' perceptions of self as well. More pointedly, one's physicality or bodily self can be perceived differently depending upon the viewer. To that end, Turner (2002) notes, "faculty women of color experience multiple marginality, characterized by lived contradiction and ambiguous empowerment. Their lives are often invisible, hidden within studies that either examine experiences of women faculty or faculty of color." This paper documents the raced and gendered bodily dynamics that women of color (WOC) faculty report encountering with White students in the classroom: specifically, how WOC feel that White students misrecognize their bodies; how such bodily misrecognition affects faculty-student interactions; and how WOC negotiate these bodily assumptions within the academy.
