Transformations Encouraged by Story Telling: Middle Eastern Adult Learners' Experiences Abroad
Nguyen, Shelbee R.
Adult Learning, v25 n4 p163-165 Nov 2014
Professionals in the field of adult and higher education recognize the path into any learning community is riddled with complexities of life exigencies. This author states that he found "light at the end of the tunnel" in an experiential, transformative study abroad course in Spanish language and culture. Transformative learning abroad can occur through critical reflection, questioning, and social engagement in inherently different ideologies. The result can be a cognitive re-ordering of perceptions, unlearning of stagnant truths, and acceptance of new assumptions. The author advocates for transormative adult learning abroad, and contends that the role of story/narrative has become even more paramount. Giving voice to the transformative experiences of non-Western learners augments understanding on the power of study abroad education for adult and higher education learners.
