A Learning Commons on a Budget
Bailin, Deb; Bouchey, Heather; Nelson, Garet; Sherriff, Graham
New England Journal of Higher Education, Nov 2014
This article describes the creation of a Lyndon Learning Commons at Lyndon State College. The Commons model emphasizes the integration of a variety of academic support services, increasing both their proximity to one another and cross-unit collaboration, in order to make these services more visible, more accessible, and easier for students to navigate. The goal is to provide a diversified, learner-centered environment integrating extra- and co-curricular activities to enhance learning, research, and teaching while also removing the stigma, or perceived stigma, of using academic support services. Lyndon State College made the most of the four "S's" (space, services, staff, and stuff [i.e., resources, such as computing facilities and furniture]) in order to have the project succeed without financial investment or physical reconstruction. Future plans for new services and collaboration include: (1) Academic triage; (2) Instructional technology support center for faculty; (3) Classroom visits; (4) Resource for local schools; and (5) Centers for Veterans, ESL students, and nontraditional students.
