We All Live Downstream. A Guide to Waste Treatment That Stops Water Pollution.
Costner, Pat; And Others
Based on the idea that the prevention and treatment of water pollution should begin at its source, this document focuses on some methods that individuals can use in their homes and businesses to treat wastewater. Chapter one, "What Is the Water Crisis?" explains the basic concepts of the hydrologic cycle, evapotranspiration, and the quantity of water available. The discussion focuses on how much water North Americans use, ways that water becomes contaminated, and some efforts underway to improve water quality. Chapter two, "Clean Water Begins at Home," stresses the cultural context of waste disposal, discusses how much waste is produced by humans and advocates water conservation. Chapter three, "What to Do with Body Products," compares on-site and off-site treatment, as well as dry versus water-based treatment. Chapters four, five, and six are concerned with commercial dry treatment systems, owner-built dry treatment systems, and greywater restoration systems. Chapter seven, "Saving Water and Money," describes common water conservation devices and tips, and provides information on various commercial low-flush toilets. Chapter eight, "Water Lessons That Travel," provides short case studies about communities that have implemented water conservation measures, and an historic account of various water-related events. Illustrations are included. Lists of suggested readings and organizations are provided. (TW)
