School Community Education Program in New York City, 1984-85. Volume IV: OEA Final Evaluation Report.
New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn. Office of Educational Assessment.
In 1984-85, the New York City Public Schools received $2,374,686 from the state legislature to operate the School Community Education Program (also known as the Umbrella Program). The program consisted of 46 different projects designed to provide innovative solutions to local educational and school problems. Thirteen of these projects are evaluated in this report. Seven were designed for staff development training, two offered career orientation counseling, one provided parenting skills instruction to students with children, and the remaining three sought to improve attendance, memory, and health among participants. Each evaluation report describes the project briefly, identifies the evaluation methodology, presents the findings, and provides recommendations for improvement. Copies of program-developed assessment instruments are provided when appropriate. The projects evaluated in this volume are: (1) the Staff Development in Writing Project (training in writing instruction, elementary school teachers); (2) the Mathematics Improvement Program (support services for mathematics teachers in grades 2-7); (3) the Help Neighborhood Center (attendance monitoring and counseling for elementary and junior high school students); (4) the Arts in General Education (AGE) Project (training in integrating arts into the general curriculum, elementary school teachers); (5) the Enrichment Program, K-9 (training in meeting needs of high-achieving pupils, for teachers of grades K-9); (6) the Mother and Child in School Program (parenting skills, high school students with children); (7) the Children Improve Memory Ability Program (memory development, grades 1-3); (8) the Sum in One Program (training in music instruction, elementary school teachers); (9) The Traveling Body Shop (human body functions and health, grades 4-6); (10) the Maximizing Access to High Schools Program (career-orientation counseling for gifted students, grades 7-8); (11) the Mastery Learning Program (training in mastery learning methodology, elementary and intermediate teachers); (12) the Early Childhood Language and Literacy project (training in improving communication arts skills, kindergarten teachers); and (13) the Vocational and Career Choices Program (career information services, grades 7-8).
