The effect of physical mobility on news consumption and on preference for a particular news medium for different geographic news was investigated in this study. A survey of 652 residents of Lansing, Michigan, linked levels of mass media news usage to the extent of residential mobility and to national and foreign traveling indexes. Demographic factors also were evaluated. Results of the study were mixed but revealed a moderate correlation of local and national news viewing and newspaper subscription with current area-residency length. Foreign and national traveling correlated slightly less with local news viewing, while national traveling was even more weakly associated with newspaper reading time. Significant differences in mass media news consumption were apparent with increased mobility. While the majority of subjects preferred television over newspapers for most news, highly mobile groups favored newspapers over television for local news. Although demographics also correlate with news behavior, mobility appears to be a factor in determining audience news consumption patterns. (Author/KS)
