A Community Assessment Survey Conducted Throughout the Central Florida Community College Service District.
Pealer, Casius H., Jr.
During fall 1977, Central Florida Community College conducted a community assessment survey throughout its three-county service district in order to access residents' knowledge, perceptions, and opinions about the college. Seven objectives were identified: what information the community already has about the college; how people learn about the college, its offerings, and its programs; what types of contact the community has had with the college in past; what impact the college has had on the community; how successful the community thinks the college has been in meeting community needs; what major obstacles have prevented the community from taking advantage of college services in the past; and what services the college should emphasize and provide in the future. Telephone interviews solicited information from 4,369 persons. Results indicated that respondents were all influenced by their distance from campus; the greater the distance, the less likely the respondent knew about or used college services and offerings. Enjoyment, travel distance, costs, program length, transportation availability were the most important items considered by respondents in deciding to enroll. Future services requested included adult education, classes lasting two to six weeks, job and career counseling, job placement services, off-campus classes, and courses in business and health. (TR)
