Teaching about Asia: Professional Materials and Reference Books.
Hantula, James N.
This two-part document serves as a guide to basic materials on Asia. The first part provides the teacher of Asian studies with nonserial examples of pertinent professional materials and reference books in print since 1979. Criteria used in selecting the items are given and a brief comparison between materials available in 1969 and 1985 is made. Included among the professional material is a discussion of recent trends in teaching about Asia as indicated by documents in the ERIC database and other professional sources; selected textbooks and tradebooks in China, Japan, and India; and appropriate voluntary agencies that provide materials. The second part of the document includes reference materials about Asia. It contains information about atlases and maps, chronologies, guides and encyclopedias, primary sources, continuing information, travel guides, and specific accounts about Asia, China, Japan, and India. These examples indicate that there is an abundance of basic materials, particularly concerning China, for teachers of Asian studies. (Author/APG)
