Interinstitutional Cooperation. Study of Independent Higher Education in Indiana.
Jellema, William W.; Olliver, James
The state of interinstitutional cooperation among private colleges and universities in Indiana was studied in 1974 as part of a larger study, and three recommendations were offered namely, that cooperative arrangements should be encouraged; that such arrangements should involve clear goals using cost-benefit analysis as a criterion; and that the independent sector should establish a federation of institutions under a single head for effective coordination at the statewide level. Of the 32 private institutions, 27 completed questionnaires. Cooperative efforts in Indiana, which occurred around six regional areas, ranged from informal discussion and single purpose bilateral agreements to multipurpose programs. Cooperation concerning educational programs focused on eliminating course duplication, sharing new program development, joint majors, joint hiring of faculty, student and teacher exchanges, and jointly run international travel programs. In the area of administration and business, cooperation included joint purchasing, common calendars, reciprocal tuition agreements, sharing of computers and other facilities, management information exchange, and research collaboration. Additional arrangements included: cooperative student recruitment, single application/financial aid forms, transfer agreements, shared library services/resources, joint health services, and cooperative extracurricular programs. Information on specific consortia, statewide associations, and conferences is included. (SW)
