This article constitutes one part of a study of the perceptions of mothers of children with disabilities in Qatar with the purpose of obtaining mothers' unique perceptions of treatment of their children within their community. Participants included 40 mothers of one or more children with disabilities from ages 4 to 19 who attended the same education center in Doha, Qatar, which had approximately 200 students in 2006. This interpretive work, based on the qualitative methodology of naturalistic inquiry, included components of both a cultural and a translation study. Mothers' responses were translated from Arabic to English and categorized through inductive analysis of data according to 22 thematic categories and 1,296 units of information. Mothers conveyed a general perception of lack of understanding of disability by community members. In order for individuals with disabilities and their families in Qatar to be an integral part of their community there needs to be a societal shift towards greater acceptance of those with disabilities.
