It Happens When We Get There. Conversations With Teachers in Alaskan Villages.
Beers, C. David
Developed through in-depth interviews with experienced "bush" teachers from interior Alaska, this booklet is the product of a five-day workshop in the design of vocational education curriculum materials for rural Alaskan secondary schools. The statements in this booklet represent the edited responses of experienced teachers to the following questions: What lessons have you learned about teaching in Alaska that would be useful to others? How do you go about translating curriculum guides and materials into learning experiences for students? What are the basic principles for implementing an educational program in an Alaskan village? Among the suggestions/comments presented here are: become a student yourself; don't go into the village with the intent of changing the native; intense communication is the most vital of all teaching qualities; humor is a major part of being able to communicate; it is important to be able to adapt to the philosophy of "it will happen when we get there"; the first and most important thing for a teacher in a bush village is to be accepted by the people; pay attention to the good things kids do and ignore the bad; teachers and administrators are often referred to as "tourists" because the turnover rate is so high and this takes its toll on the kids; teachers should try to organize as much of the instruction as possible around outdoor activities because the kids live outdoors except when confined by the schools; start kids out with hands-on experiences, not pictures and words.
