This qualitative research study used narrative inquiry to explore the assistant principal experiences that contribute to transformational leadership practices in new principals. Eight administrators, who were in their first or second year as a principal, participated in the study. The findings suggested that principals play an important role in the experiences of assistant principals. Principals have the power to impact assistant principals in positive or negative ways in which will later influence their leadership capacity with their own staff members. Recurring story elements included building relationships, developing future leaders, expressing a clear vision, providing life-long learning, and viewing teachers as individuals.
