The Study of Human Communication from Three Systems Paradigms.
Monge, Peter R.
There are three general scientific methods for studying the communication process: mechanistic, organic, and systemic. After reviewing the characteristics and research implications of each method, it can be concluded that the systems paradigm is most appropriate to the logic of communication theory. The systems method is defined as a process of establishing direct relationships between logical theories and empirical realities. It permits study of important dimensions of the communication process that are not integral parts of the other methods. The systems paradigm is a viable alternative to other approaches. Further, it is not only possible to study communication processes by this method, it is necessary to do so because of the inherent nature and logic of the processes. Studies using this paradigm can provide new solutions to old problems, make current problems more manageable, and generate new and productive issues for future research. (RN)
