Using Both Head and Heart for Effective Leadership
Love, Cathleen T.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v97 n2 p17-19 Apr 2005
This article serves as a review of current literature on the topic of leadership. Leadership is a dynamic process of relationship building between individuals and groups. Leadership theory can guide practice, and integrating theory with thoughtful practice has always been critical to family and consumer sciences (FCS) professionals in working with individuals, families, and communities. Common leadership traits used in the literature include compassion, authenticity, confidence, courage, and humility. Key skills include active listening, empathy, perspective taking, cooperation, negotiation, and expression of feelings in appropriate ways. Leaders must help individuals examine what they are thinking and feeling, where those emotions are coming from, and what they want to do about it. It is the job of the leader to nurture the growth and development of lifelong confident learners who are reflective about their daily practice.
