The 36 papers in this book were presented at the Fifth International Symposium on Adapted Physical Activity. Presentations document some of the research findings and new ideas in physical education and recreation programs designed to improve the quality of life for special populations. The collection represents the breadth of the field, from the motor development of disabled children to programs for older adults, and extending to psychiatric disorders, post-cardiac rehabilitation, and concerns of disabled athletes. Papers are grouped under the following section titles: (1) motor development of disabled children; (2) motor skill training; (3) physical activity in cardiac conditions; (4) programming for the handicapped; (5) diagnosis and physical activity prescription in psychiatric disorders; (6) characteristics and assessment of disabled athletes; (7) sport and recreation for the disabled; (8) aging and physical activity concerns of the elderly; and (9) programs for seniors.
