A Qualitative Analysis of Ninth Grade High School Teachers' Perceptions of Online Discussions to Supplement Classroom Instruction
Watson, Rhonda
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Current web technologies are changing the landscape of education. Today's students communicate and learn differently than those of previous generations, yet a gap still exists between available technology and teacher use of technology for instruction. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study was to examine teachers' perceptions of asynchronous online discussion boards via SchoolFusion to extend the traditional classroom. The research and interview questions addressed perceived advantages, disadvantages, student learning, student motivation, social knowledge creation, and why some teachers are not using online discussions. The discussion boards have been available to teachers at the research site for several years, yet a small minority of teachers is actually using them as an instructional tool. The data from this qualitative descriptive case study revealed that although a number of disadvantages exist, the use of online discussion forums (ODFs) are overall advantageous to extending the traditional classroom; however, some teachers are not using them due to time constraints and their need to perceive relevance and value. This examination of teachers' perceptions of online discussion use may lead to professional development that promotes teacher efficacy in facilitating effective online discussions that promote learning.
