Why Teach Visual Culture?

Visual culture is a hot topic in art education right now as some teachers are dedicated to teaching it and others are adamant that it has no place in a traditional art class. Visual culture, the author asserts, can include just about anything that is visually represented. Although people often think of visual culture as contemporary visuals such as graphic design, advertising, films, television, and videos, visual culture can include anything in a culture dependent on visual representation. As a body, the author explains, these images make up a culture's visual culture. As part of the post Discipline-Based Art Education generation, our students study the culture in which art was produced and learn that visual culture is transient--changing constantly as the culture that creates and understands it changes. It is for this reason that the author introduces students to some of the great art and then has them connect their visual culture with fine art. Students are often surprised at how much of their visual culture includes references to past visual cultures. The author concludes that unless students connect fine art with their own culture, they will neither learn nor remember what is being taught in their art classes.
