Motivational Attitudes of American College Students of German in the Eighties: A Questionnaire Study.
Kosbab, F. Paul
A survey of German language students at all levels at Oklahoma State University sought information on the students' motivation for learning the language, previous exposure to it, attitudes toward the language and its structures, preferred language learning strategies, difficulties with aspects of the language, and actual or anticipated uses of German. Results from 66 responses to the study questionnaire (out of approximately 88 sent) indicate a variety of motivations, and considerable tourist or living experience in Germany or German family heritage. A majority of the students indicated some difficulty with German phonology, and most found German structure to be difficult but learnable. Almost 90% preferred a combination of formal and informal language learning strategies. More than half of the students found that they translated into and from German during learning, using English as their main vehicle of thought, and most viewed their instructors as embodiments of German language and culture. Over 80% could imagine living in West Germany, and most liked German food and could imagine being married to a German spouse. (MSE)
