Analysis of the vocational education and training (VET) sector in Australia shows that almost 1.54 million students undertook training in the publicly-funded VET sector; 51.5 percent were males and 48.5 percent were females; since 1997, total annual hours of training increased by 10.6 million to 312.8 million hours; and 4 fields of study accounted for most training activity: business, administration, and economics; engineering and surveying; multi-field education; and services, hospitality, and transportation. In the total number of enrollments in VET subjects exceeded 10 million for the first time, and the 5 most popular areas of learning were administration, business, economics, and law; engineering and processing; mathematics and computing; hospitality, tourism, and personal services; and humanities. More than 70 percent of VET students successfully completed 1 or more subjects. Qualifications classified under the Australian Qualification Framework accounted for more than half of qualifications issued. The majority of training was funded from recurrent state and territory allocations for VET and Commonwealth funds. Technical and Further Education (TAFE) and other government providers accounted for 75 percent of VET students; community providers for 15.2 percent; and other registered providers for 9.8 percent.
