This article considers and assesses a youth exchange project between two community-based youth centers: The Purple Thistle Centre in East Vancouver, British Columbia, and the K'asho Got'ine Youth Centre in Fort Good Hope, Northwest Territories. Both centers serve primarily low-income youth, but after that the similarities are very few. The collaboration between the Thistle and Fort Good Hope has involved three youth exchanges (2003, 2004, 2007) with the specific intention of developing an on-going relationship. The projects bring together 10-12 youth aged 14-18 from each community in a reciprocal youth exchange with the explicit goal of generating native/non-native conversations, experiences, and friendships. There is a vast amount written, said, and assumed about how such cross-cultural youth education projects inculcate greater tolerance and understanding in participants, and in this article the author explores some of the attitudes held by participant youth as a context for considering whether this project contributes to our core goal of moving past multiculturalist, pluralist notions of tolerance and toward understanding and hospitality. Specifically, the author asks if native/non-native exchanges are useful efforts in moving youth past tolerance and toward hospitality and an understanding of each others' homes and lives. The answers are of course incomplete, but with a hope that this article can make a small contribution to the literature on both intranational and international youth exchanges, as well as suggest a praxis based on the kind of "hospitality" described by Ivan Illich, Gustavo Esteva, and others.
