Ecotourism in an Educational Context: Promoting Learning Opportunities through Travel
Coles, Tim; Poland, Roger H. C.; Clifton, Julian
Journal of Biological Education, v49 n2 p213-217 2015
The global expansion and diversification of the travel market has opened up new opportunities to deliver educational programmes through tourism. Applying the principles and practices commonly associated with ecotourism enables students to gain lasting benefits through their active participation in conservation-oriented activities. In many cases, the limited facilities and lack of infrastructure which add to the "challenge" for students make this form of tourism ideally suited to more remote and rural areas within developing countries which would otherwise be bypassed by tourism development (Clifton and Benson 2006). There is, therefore, a clear synergy between educationally oriented ecotourism, conservation of natural resources and rural economic development, particularly in developing countries. Whilst it is important to ensure that students' activities are aligned with the host community's standards, norms and values, experience to date has shown that this mode of ecotourism can benefit both visitor and host whilst delivering significant and tangible environmental outcomes.
