University Facilities Respond to the Changing Landscape of Higher Education Including the Top Ten Critical Facilities Issues. APPA Thought Leaders Series

This report was issued from a 2006 meeting of individuals representing a variety of higher education institutions. The purpose of the meeting was to consider the future of higher education with particular attention to its built environment. The report provides a contextual overview of the changing landscape of higher education by identifying the drivers or trends affecting higher education's future. Seven trends were drawn from summit discussions, including: (1) Financial constraints; (2) Competition; (3) Changing demographics; (4) Demand for innovation and tradition; (5) Changing stakeholder expectations; (6) Accountability; and (7) Resistance to change. The report relates these trends to the top ten issues affecting facilities professionals as identified by research and focus group discussion with APPA members: (1) Resource scarcity and affordability; (2) Performance measures and accountability; (3) Customer service; (4) Information technology; (5) Developing the lab and classroom of the future; (6) Facility reinvestment and total cost of ownership; (7) Workforce management and demographics; (8) Sustainability; (9) Energy and environmental resource management and (10) safety, security and business continuity. Contents include five sections: (I) Executive Summary; (II) The Changing Landscape of Higher Education; (III) Top Ten Critical Facilities Issues; (IV) Discussion Questions and (V) Conclusion.
