Complex decision-making environments often demand that a range of alternative strategies be identified and compared for their shared value in achieving desired ends. Simple parametric statistical procedures such as analysis of variance and discriminant function analysis can be used in such situations to compare (using selected criteria) the value of one set of decisions over another. The Multiple Alternatives Model (MAM), formulated by the author in 1978, is described as a system of linear equalities and inequalities, whose dependent variables (the "unknowns") are the various alternatives being evaluated for possible entry into the final solution set, and whose coefficients are criterion values that constrain the comparison and contrast of these alternatives during evaluation. This paper discusses the use of this model in various decision-making contexts. Topics discussed include validation of criteria-based decision-making, structure of alternatives in decision-making, content and process considerations, statistical utilities for decision model validation, tools and mechanics of MAM decision validation, and special considerations in hierarchical model validation.
