The Top 100: Graduate Degrees Conferred
Borden, Victor M. H.
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, v28 n11 p26-34 Jul 2011
Recently, some critics and policymakers have started to question the value of a college education given the increasing costs of attending and the commensurate high debt levels of college graduates. Past and present studies also demonstrate that the average value masks important variation by degree level and field of study. This paper focuses on graduate-level degrees. On average, individuals earning master's and doctoral degrees have higher average earnings than those who end their education at the associate's or bachelor's level, but it is also true that engineering bachelor's degree recipients earn more on average than doctoral degree recipients in the humanities. As noted in the Top 100 issues for associate's and bachelor's degrees, the most recently available degree completion data are for academic year 2009-10. This paper presents the Top 100 tables that show the total number of degrees awarded for specific minority groups. It includes the prior year total along with two percentages: (1) the percentage of degrees in that degree and disciplinary area conferred to members of the target minority group; and (2) the percentage change from the prior year in degrees conferred to the target minority group in the degree/disciplinary area.
