Will I Lose a Tooth? Will I Learn to Read? Problem Posing with Multicultural Children's Literature
Quintero, Elizabeth
Young Children, v59 n3 p56-62 May 2004
By using a problem-posing, critical literacy approach employing children's literature, even the complex issues of a world in conflict and confusion can be addressed through an ongoing dialogue. In this article, the author defines "critical literacy" as a process of constructing and critically using language (oral and written) as a means of expression, interpretation, and/or transformation of lives. Problem posing is a structure used to consider information that is new, to ask questions, and to relate new information to participants' past experience and background knowledge. This method encourages integrated learning that is both developmentally and culturally meaningful through reading and interacting with the story, and engaging in related learning activities. This article includes rationale, methods, format, and examples from a preschool class and a first grade class. Further activities are also included.
