Cultivating Audiences: Taming, Teaching, Transforming
Nicolucci, Sandra
Music Educators Journal, v97 n1 p37-43 Sep 2010
Satisfying and successful school concerts require an active, empathic, and cooperative partnership between performers and audience members. As music educators work to prepare artful, dignified, and confident performers, "audiences" for these performers must be cultivated just as purposefully. Concertgoers can be motivated to consume school performances with understanding, appreciation, and focused attention. In addition to the goal of presenting musically superb performances, teaching and transforming audiences should also be priorities on every music educator's to-do list. This article provides some suggestions for attaining mutual respect. (Contains 8 notes.)
