Participants in this workshop were scientists from various disciplines, including public health, oncology, nutrition, epidemiology, biochemistry, immunology, pharmacology, pediatrics, geriatric medicine, and the behavioral sciences. The workshop featured deliberations by medical experts on the dimensions and demographics of hunger in America. The deliberations included papers on nutrition throughout the human life-cycle, interface between dietary habits and some prevalent chronic health problems, nutrition and immunity with emphasis on protein-energy malnutrition, cancer and nutritional management of AIDS, the nutritional implications of sickle cell anemia, and local as well as international nutrition issues. This publication includes 18 papers presented at the workshop as well as discussions stimulated by the addresses. (JD)
