A Circle of Courage Level System in Day Treatment
Harper, Elaine
Reclaiming Children and Youth: The Journal of Strength-based Interventions, v14 n3 p152 Fall 2005
Educators continue to seek effective behavior management strategies and therapeutic techniques to help students with emotional disturbance and behavior disorders to manage their own behavior and to achieve academically. One strategy employed to overcome the challenges is the use of a level system in the classroom. Level systems are often used with students and are described as behavior management systems by which "students develop behaviors necessary for success in school by advancing through behaviorally defined levels as they show evidence of improvement". The stated purpose of some level systems in the literature includes: to increase self-management; to teach students appropriate peer group functioning skills; to increase self-motivation and academic achievement. The Circle of Courage is the foundation of a Level System in a day treatment center using the Re-Education Model. This article describes how the Circle of Courage is applied and highlights characteristics of therapeutic use of tire value-based Level System: use of the group, individualization, understandability, collaboration, and a connection to the future.
