Essays and reports useful to English teachers are collected under four headings: (1) "Issues and Problems" contains a 1959 report on the basic issues of teaching English, the Report of the Language Committee of the School and College Conference on English (April 1940), and the Report of the Literature Committee of the School and College Conference on English (April 1942). (2) "Language and Writing" presents six essays by Charles Fries, John S. Kenyon, J. B. Greenough, and G. L. Kittredge on the fundamentals of teaching writing, and a 1945 report of the Modern Language Association (MLA) Commission on Trends in Education. (3) "Literature" contains an MLA report, "Literature in American Education," and essays by J. L. Lowes, Thomas De Quincey, and Erich Auerbach. (4) "A Program of Action" describes the English program designed by members of the Conference on Basic Issues in the Teaching of English (1959) to test hypotheses in literature, writing, and teacher preparation and to involve all members of the profession.
