Emotional Flooding--Using Empathy to Help Babies Manage Strong Emotions
Gillespie, Linda; Hunter, Amy
Young Children, v63 n5 p46-47 Sep 2008
Often a young child's challenging behavior results from emotional flooding--being overwhelmed by one's emotions. The authors explain that in children, the "thinking brain," the cerebral cortex, is not fully developed, and children get emotionally overwhelmed more easily than adults because they process their experiences through the "emotional brain"--the limbic system. Gillespie and Hunter suggest that teachers use empathy to calm children, and they describe how to put empathy into practice. (Contains 4 resources.)
