The UNC Charlotte Code of Student Academic Integrity.
Toenjes, Richard H.
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has developed a Code of Student Academic Integrity as a solution for problems of academic dishonesty in large, young, public, urban universities where traditional honor codes will not work. The Code defines violations and gives typical examples. It provides a friendly settlement procedure in which a faculty member resolves a case of dishonesty directly with the student. A "first offenders" file is designed to deter repeat violations. A faculty-student Academic Integrity Board (AIB) deals with particularly serious first offenses and all second offenses. The AIB is empowered to expel guilty students. A faculty-approved statement of "Deciding Guilt and Punishment" is provided to guide faculty members handling cases directly using the settlement procedure. Results of a study of the impact of the Code show an increase in convictions of academic dishonesty, with most cases being handled by faculty directly. Faculty using the Code in dealing with cheating report that it provides clear guidance. Students who study the Code think highly of it. Efforts to keep the Integrity Code before the minds of the faculty and students are continuing. (Author/MSE)
