This study examined the basic utility of topic models, a computational linguistics model for text-based data, to the investigation of the process of couple therapy. Linguistic analysis offers an additional lens through which to examine clinical data, and the topic model is presented as a novel methodology within couple and family psychology that is potentially useful in exploring couple therapy transcripts. Data came from a couple therapy study that examined the effects of Traditional Behavioral Couple Therapy (TBCT) and Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) for distressed, heterosexual married couples (Christensen, Atkins, Berns, Wheeler, Baucom, & Simpson, 2004). The topic model was able to differentiate between therapist and couple, therapy modality, and level of relationship satisfaction based solely on transcript data. In addition to overall model fit, the most predictive topics contained clinically relevant material, supporting the basic utility of topic models to detect and differentiate data from couple therapy transcripts. Given the complexity of couple therapy, a methodology such as topic models is an attractive complement to the currently available quantitative methods.
