Slippery Rock University (SRU), located in western Pennsylvania, is one of 14 state-owned institutions of higher education in Pennsylvania. The university has a rich tradition of providing professional preparation programs in special education, therapeutic recreation, physical education, and physical therapy for individuals with disabilities. Slippery Rock's Center on Disability and Health offers the Adapted Physical Activity (APA) Program, a multidisciplinary program that provides training and practical experiences for students working in physical activity and wellness promotion for individuals with disabilities. It is the only one of its kind in Pennsylvania and one of the largest undergraduate programs of its kind in the United States. A Master of Science Degree program in Adapted Physical Activity has also recently been submitted to the state for review. This program has been developed based upon public policy at the state and federal levels, taking into consideration the current status of physical inactivity, overweight, and secondary conditions that are prevalent among this population. It also focuses upon a community-based, active-living model that takes place in the communities where people with disabilities live, work, and play. This article describes the APA Program's mission, goals, and objectives as they relate to both teaching future professionals and serving every citizen with disabilities in western Pennsylvania and the nation.
