Pramathevan, G. Sundari; Garces-Bacsal, Rhoda Myra
Roeper Review, v34 n3 p145-157 2012
This study aimed to identify factors that influence acts of altruism among gifted female adolescents in Singapore within the context of their overseas learning experiences. Ten teacher-nominated gifted adolescents from ages 15 to 17 who had exceeded the mandated hours (12 hours per year) of voluntary community service in their school were the respondents for this study. Semistructured interviews were conducted and data were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. The study showed that personality factors and value system (empathy, high sense of justice, optimism), social skills, and social factors (family, school culture, and service-learning experiences) contributed to acts of altruism among gifted female adolescents. Research results can be used as a guide to structure educational experiences that help foster a caring and socially responsive classroom for gifted pupils, enabling them to use their talents for the betterment of society.
