The Research We Need in Religious Education: Four Facets
Lawson, Kevin E.
Religious Education, v101 n2 p157-161 Spr 2006
It is tempting to respond to the question of what research is needed in religious education by saying, "Everything!" Although religious education as an academic discipline can be viewed as over one hundred years old, and much research has been done on a variety of issues, there is still so much that is not understood. In this paper, the author discusses four major areas of research that are needed: (1) Theological research (Scripture and Tradition; (2) Historical research (Tradition); (3) Philosophical/Conceptual research (Reason); and (4) Empirical research (Experience). The author also briefly discusses the kinds of research needed in each area in making significant progress in the development of sound theory and practice in religious education. (Contains 4 footnotes.)
