Teacher Education in a Global Society
Jenlink, Patrick M.
Teacher Education and Practice, v21 n4 p424-426 Fall 2008
These are strange times for teacher education in a democratic society because globalization dominates economic, political, and technological interfaces among social institutions, nation-states, and the world. These are also dangerous times for teacher education in a democratic society because the expansion of neoliberalism as form of contemporary globalization increasingly permeates all aspects of society and influences social institutions--particularly, education. Teacher education serves many functions in contemporary democratic society, but perhaps most important is the function of teacher education in preparing teachers to consider how schools play into facilitating an alternative discourse grounded in a critique of war, terrorism, oppression, and abuse, to focus on the elements of society that everyone would choose not to pass on to the next generations. The author stresses that teacher education must necessarily facilitate this alternative discourse by preparing teachers who, as citizen teachers, are socially engaged in the pedagogical work of democracy. Understanding the challenges confronting teacher education in an increasingly global society is a critically important conversation, one that requires participation of all teacher educators concerned with the collective future of teacher education in a democratic society.
