This document is comprised of the two 2001 issues of a newsletter of the Harvard Family Research Project, designed to share new ideas and experiences in evaluating systems reform and comprehensive child and family services. The first issue focuses on strategic communications and efforts of nonprofit agencies to evaluate strategic communication efforts and includes articles on the following topics: (1) using the media to build public will; (2) innovative ways for non-profits to build capacity for strategic communications; (3) engaging media partners to prevent teen pregnancy; (4) incorporating strategic communications in the KIDS COUNT project; (5) using the media as a tool for change; (6) how ethnic media challenge the usual perceptions of welfare reform; and (7) building a strategic communications plan. The second issue concerns the evaluation of after-school programs and out-of-school time, and includes articles on: (1) the contribution of developmental research; (2) descriptions of evaluations for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers and the CORAL Program, a 10-year initiative to improve academic achievement through out-of-school activities; (3) involving youth in evaluation and research; (4) designing and using logic models; and (5) initiating program evaluation in new programs. Each issue includes information on training opportunities and evaluation resources. (KB)
