Depth in an Age of Digital Distraction: The Value of a Catholic College in Today's World
Kelly, Conor M.
Journal of Catholic Higher Education, v34 n2 p113-133 Sum 2015
A commitment to holistic student formation in the liberal arts tradition and to the Catholic faith is a hallmark of most Catholic higher education institutions. To be most effective, Catholic institutions must adapt this central mission to changing circumstances in an age of ubiquitous mobile technologies and persistent digital distractions. By combining the Catholic liberal arts insistence on an examined life with other resources from the Catholic faith, these schools can present a more complete vision of the good life, thereby empowering their students to evaluate critically the problematic presuppositions of a digital age. In the process, they will help their students build lives of depth and meaning while also reaffirming the distinctive and enduring value of Catholic colleges in today's world.
