A Field Guide for Sign Language Research.
Stokoe, William; Kuschel, Rolf
Field researchers of sign language are the target of this methodological guide. The prospective researcher is briefed on the rationale of sign language study as language study and as distinct from the study of kinesics. Subjects covered include problems of translating, use of interpreters, and ethics. Instruments for obtaining social and language usage information from subjects are presented. Lists are provided of signs, basic sign vocabulary, cultural items, sentences for sign translation, first steps in analysis, and archives and outlets. A section on record-making covers technology, the use of the notebook, still and motion picture photography, and videotape. (JB)
