Shaughnessy, Michael F.; Fulgham, Susan M.
Educational Technology, v53 n4 p60-62 Jul-Aug 2013
Brian Lewis, International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) chief executive officer, is an education advocate and leader specializing in management and governance, policy, corporate communications, branding, and marketing. He provides leadership to ISTE's Washington, DC, and Eugene, Oregon, offices and directs organizational planning and performance, while working with the ISTE board of directors to ensure effective governance as well as legal and ethical integrity. He joined ISTE in 2012 following a 25-year career in both public and private sectors. He served as the chief strategy officer and interim CEO for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), as executive director of the California Association of School Business Officials (CASBO), as assistant executive director for the California School Boards Association (CSBA), as director of governmental relations for the San Diego County Office of Education and the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA), and as senior legislative advocate for CSBA. He also has served as an elected school board member for the Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District in Roseville, California. In this article, Brian Lewis is interviewed about the ISTE, its accomplishments and prospects over the next ten years, its stance on "scripted programs" that teachers use, and how the ISTE can help the average classroom teacher with newer technologies. He also presents insights into using technology in classrooms, including gaming.
