Seeing and Playing as Labor: Toward a Visual Materialist Pedagogy of Video Games through Walter Benjamin
Bulut, Ergin
Review of Education, Pedagogy & Cultural Studies, v35 n5 p408-425 2013
In this article, the author draws specifically on the work of Walter Benjamin and engages with the world of video games by focusing on the constitution of labor as it unfolds in modding practices, as well as approaching the very act of seeing labor in a highly visual culture where value is extracted not just through the labor process but also through the mobilization of eyeballs in relation to affect and desire (Beller 2006). Ergin Bulut makes the argument that Benjamin's conceptualization of producers as the owners of their own production and imagination is crucial to understanding the ways in which games, gamers, and gaming culture operate in the contemporary world. Bulut writes that he hopes to demonstrate that Benjamin's writings on the commodity, imagination, children's theater, creativity, and freedom provide useful tools for constructing a visual materialist pedagogy in relation to game studies.
